Gray & Sons Watch Repair Guide

Repair Documentation and Photo Updates

Learn which intake records, estimates, approvals, photos, milestone updates, and completion details may document an individual watch repair.

At Gray and Sons, we don’t just "fix" watches; we preserve legacies. For over 44 years, our Miami-based workshop has been the gold standard for luxury timepiece restoration.

When you entrust us with a Rolex, Patek Philippe, or Audemars Piguet, you aren't just getting a service; you’re getting a comprehensive physical "medical record" of your watch’s journey through our doors.

Why Documentation is the Backbone of Luxury Repair

In the world of high horology, a watch is like a fine automobile. Without a service history, its value is a question mark. At Gray and Sons, our reporting serves three vital purposes:

  1. Service History: A documented maintenance history helps show the watch’s condition and service history.
  2. Transparency: You deserve to see what we see. We pull back the curtain on the complex mechanics of your movement.
  3. Accountability: Covered repair work follows the written repair warranty—12 months by default, with a 24-month exception only for an approved modern Rolex repair scope. The final estimate and agreement control.

The Gray and Sons "Report Card": Step-by-Step

Our documentation process begins the second your watch arrives and doesn't end until it is safely back on your wrist.

1. The Initial Diagnostic Photo & Estimate

Before a single screw is turned, our workshop manager inspects the timepiece. We photograph the watch in its "as-received" condition. Our master-trained watchmakers then create a detailed estimate, documenting visible wear, structural issues, and movement performance.

2. The Internal "Deep Dive"

Once the case is opened, the real work begins. We document:

  • The Movement State: We identify rusted parts, dried lubricants, or previous "amateur" repairs.
  • Part Sourcing: We document parts replaced and the disclosed, approved part category—manufacturer/original, compatible, donor, refurbished, or custom-fabricated as applicable.
  • In-Progress Photography: For complex restorations, we often photograph the movement disassembled to show the client exactly why certain interventions were necessary.

3. The Quality Control (QC) Report

After reassembly, your watch must pass a rigorous multi-point inspection. We don't just say it works; we prove it with data:

  • Amplitude & Timing: When applicable, timing equipment records movement data against the watch-, caliber-, condition-, and approved-scope-specific acceptance criteria; not every watch is chronometer-rated.
  • Water-Resistance Testing: When included in the approved scope and suitable for the watch, we document the method, level, and result at the time of testing; this is not a permanent waterproof guarantee.
  • The Winding Wheel: We monitor the power reserve for 48–72 hours, documenting its ability to hold a charge.

Experience the Gray and Sons Difference

Whether you visit our showroom across from the Bal Harbour Shops or use our secure Easy Ship Box from anywhere in the U.S., you will receive the same level of white-glove reporting.

Will I Receive Updates or Photos During My Watch Repair at Gray & Sons?

When sending a prized luxury timepiece for repair or restoration, clear documentation and communication can be as important as the workshop work itself.

Here is everything you need to know about how we keep you informed throughout the repair process at Gray & Sons Jewelers.

Detailed Estimates & Photographic Diagnostic Reports

Before authorized work begins on a watch, the watchmaking team performs the evaluation required for the proposed repair scope.

  • Before-Repair Documentation: During initial inspection, we log details of your item's condition. For complex restorations, custom work, or extensive movement overhauls, high-resolution diagnostic photos are captured to record existing wear, damaged components, or rusted parts.
  • Transparent Repair Quotes: You receive an itemized breakdown outlining the necessary work—from ultrasonic component cleaning and part replacements to movement regulation and water-resistance testing.

Clear Communication at Key Milestones

Rather than overwhelming you with daily messages while your item undergoes meticulous testing, we focus on key operational milestones:

  1. Receipt & Intake: Confirmation as soon as your item safely arrives at our Miami Beach facility.
  2. Estimate Approval: Direct contact from your dedicated repair specialist to walk through findings, present photos if applicable, and answer questions before work starts.
  3. In-Progress Updates: If our watchmakers discover unforeseen issues or rare parts requirements mid-repair, we pause and notify you immediately with updated details.
  4. Final Quality Assurance & Shipping: Notification once your item passes rigorous quality control testing (including multi-day power reserve and timing tests), along with tracking details for secure return shipment.

Requesting Step-by-Step Visual Documentation

We regularly feature step-by-step restoration highlights, side-by-side macro photography, and before-and-after transformations on our blog and social channels.

If you are requesting a specialized restoration—such as repairing a vintage dial, rebuilding a stretched Rolex bracelet, or restoring a rare movement—simply ask your service advisor for photo updates when approving your estimate. We are always happy to capture behind-the-bench photos of your piece in progress whenever feasible.
